Monster Sketch Theater

Hey, everybody! Today I’m launching episode one of my new YouTube series, Monster Sketch Theater.

As is pretty obvious from my website, I’ve always had a passion for monsters. It never fails, after watching a movie with great creature designs or coming across a new little insect while on a hike, I always want to break out my sketchbook (or computer!) and come up with some designs of my own.

For anyone else out there who shares my appreciation of the macabre, I thought it would be fun to make a YouTube series of me painting some of these monsters and creatures.  The creature in this first video is a ghoul.  I wanted to start with something that was a little more… down to earth. He’s your typical scavenger who hangs out in cemeteries, so he can take advantage of the regularly delivered corpses. It’s a pretty straightforward design, but it was fun to do.

The video is definitely not a tutorial, but you can see my process for color sketching. The original sketch took about two hours to paint. I mostly talk about the ideas and thoughts I have when concepting creatures. Admittedly, some of it is a little out there. But thinking about a monster’s motivation or particular habits, or even its physiology, is one of the most enjoyable parts for me.

I’m by no means a professional narrator, but my brother-in-law Tim Baldock did create music for it. Hopefully, it will mask any irritating speech patterns that might otherwise drive you away.

I hope you enjoy episode one of Monster Sketch Theater!
